The town of Pego begins this Thursday a cultural program to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the death of Vizier al-Azraq, featuring a conference, a concert, and muixerangues performances.

The commemoration of the 750th anniversary of the death of Vizier al-Azraq starts this Thursday in Pego with a specialized conference. Researcher Jota Martínez will give a talk at 7:30 PM at the Carmen Alemany Bay Library, titled “Music in the Time of al-Azraq: Musical Instruments of the Medieval Tradition,” where he will showcase reconstructions of period instruments.
The program continues this Friday, May 1st, also in Pego. At 7:30 PM, at the same library, the concert “Planto por la muerte de al-Azraq” will take place, performed by Jota Martínez Ensemble. This unique musical proposal aims to transport attendees to the sounds of the Andalusian past. After the concert, around 8:45 PM, the activity will move outdoors with a muixerangues performance in Passeig Cervantes, featuring the participation of the Muixeranga de la Marina Alta and the Muixeranga d’Alginet.
These events serve as a prelude to the Commemorative Day to be held on Tuesday, May 5th, in Vall de Gallinera, the exact date marking 750 years since the death of the «Blue Vizier». The day in Vall de Gallinera will include talks on the Andalusian roots of traditional cuisine, a communal meal, conferences on the vizier's death, and a climb to Benissili Castle, where there will be more talks, poetry recitals, and the premiere of the commemorative song for the Year al-Azraq.
The evening in Vall de Gallinera will conclude with the sunset prayer, the inauguration of a ceramic mosaic, a picnic dinner with a tasting of al-Azraq coca, a participatory poetry recital extending until midnight, and a night discussion. The organization reminds that the registration deadline for the communal meal or the castle climb is Sunday, April 26th.
