The indefinite strike by teachers at the Maria Ibars, Historiador Chabàs, and Sorts de la Mar high schools in Dénia has had a significant economic impact on educators. According to the tally, 112,540 euros in salaries were lost at IES Maria Ibars, 93,120 euros at Historiador Chabàs, and 60,640 euros at Sorts de la Mar, totaling 266,300 euros.
The teachers have stated that this amount of money should not go to an unknown destination but should be reinvested in the schools themselves to address serious deficiencies. Among the specific improvements proposed are the air conditioning of classrooms, which have reached 30 degrees Celsius during the current heatwave, the reduction of class sizes to combat overcrowding, the improvement of laboratory and art materials, the purchase of computers, the creation of a volleyball court, and the provision of shaded areas in the playground.
The situation is not unique to Dénia. In other schools in the region, such as the IES of Teulada, 57,300 euros in salaries have been lost, and at the Gargasindi in Calp, 19,350 euros, according to sector sources.
Unions believe that the offers from the Ministry of Education are "meager" and aim to wear down the teachers. Although the proposed salary increases could have been accepted by some unions, the teaching collective emphasizes other fundamental demands such as ending excessive class sizes, addressing staff shortages, promoting the Valencian language, and improving school building conditions.
The Ministry of Education sent a new proposal this Friday, and the unions will meet with them again on Sunday to continue negotiations.
