The Pego Municipal Theater has been closed since October 2023, when its roof collapsed over the audience seating area. Since then, the town has been without a key space for cultural and social life. Repairing the building was deemed unfeasible, and the construction of a new theater was proposed, a process that is progressing slowly.
Given this situation, Compromís has expressed its dismay and recalled that back in April 2024, it presented a proposal to the municipal plenary to use the Municipal Market as a provisional solution. According to the party, this space, currently disused, meets the necessary conditions: it is open-plan, central, has ample capacity, and is accessible for people with reduced mobility.
Compromís's proposal included moving the sound and lighting equipment from the closed theater to the market, where other activities such as bobbin lace meetings, video game events, and the 'arròs amb crosta' event already take place. The plenary approved this initiative, but the Valencianists lament that the governing team, led by Enrique Moll (PSPV), has done nothing to make it a reality.
It is absurd that Pego has potential alternative spaces, and two and a half years after the theater's closure, there is no space that provisionally replaces the function of that building.
The party insists on the importance of resuming cultural activity and points out that one of its proposals for the 2025 budget was to allocate funds to enable an alternative space. However, this was rejected, and instead, the government committed to improving the old institute's gym to move performing arts shows there, an alternative that has also not materialized.
For all these reasons, Compromís demands an "immediate solution" and the acceleration of the tender for the design and construction of the new Municipal Theater, considering the current situation "absurd" due to the lack of a provisional space.
