The closure of the Pego Municipal Theater caused great dismay in the town, as it represented a significant loss for cultural and social life. From the outset, Compromís per Pego worked to find an alternative space that could meet the needs of artists, associations, and schools in the town.
In April 2024, five months after the theater's closure, the Compromís municipal group proposed a viable and quickly implementable alternative in the plenary session: the Municipal Market building. This space, currently disused, meets the conditions to be used provisionally, as it is open-plan, central, with ample capacity, accessible for people with reduced mobility, and covered. Furthermore, the sound and lighting equipment from the old theater could be installed here without needing to purchase new equipment.
Despite some deficiencies typical of an old building, Compromís argues that the Market can host most of the activities that took place in the old theater. In fact, events such as bobbin lace meetings and gaming sessions are already held there. The Valencianist proposal was approved by the municipal plenary at the time.
We do not know whether to attribute this situation to the local government's management incapacity or to that toxic cordon that PSOE and PP have built around everything that comes from Compromís.
However, Compromís denounces that the local government, led by socialist Enrique Moll, has not taken any action to implement this plenary agreement. The party again demanded in the 2025 budget that economic resources be allocated for the renovation works of the space. But, according to Compromís, the local government rejected their proposal in the budget pact with the PP and proposed an alternative project in the old institute's gymnasium, which would be operational in the first quarter of 2026.
The Valencianists point out that this alternative has also not materialized: "We are already at the beginning of the second quarter, and the town of Pego still lacks a space for performing arts." Therefore, they express their indignation at this "absurd situation," as two years and six months have passed since the theater's closure without a provisional solution.
Compromís demands an immediate solution for the provisional facilities and the acceleration of the procedure to tender the drafting and construction of a new Municipal Theater. The party states that it has fulfilled its role as an opposition party and government alternative, and it is now up to the local government to do its job.
