The town of Benissa, in the Marina Alta region, begins its Puríssima Xiqueta Festivities today with the proclamation and the traditional chupinazo, marking the start of an intense program combining culture, music, and activities for all ages.

The celebrations in honor of the Puríssima Xiqueta, the town's patron saint, will run until May 3rd. The program includes a variety of events that reflect Benissa's rich tradition and festive spirit.
Yesterday, as a cultural prelude, the Premis 25 d'Abril and the Salvador Soria painting competition awards were presented at the Centre d’Art Taller d’Ivars. Today, Saturday, April 18th, the proclamation will be delivered at 8 PM in the basilica, followed by the singing of the patron saint's anthem accompanied by the Societat Lírica i Musical. At 11:45 PM, the chupinazo will officially mark the start of the festivities, enlivened by the Xaranga l'Espardenya.
One of the most anticipated moments will be Friday, April 24th, with the Coronation of the Queens, an event that will precede a very intense festive program. On Saturday, April 25th, the Day of the Offering will be celebrated, with the traditional flower offering to the patron saint. Sunday, April 26th, the Day of the Puríssima Xiqueta, will be the central day with a solemn mass, mascletà, and procession, in addition to the descent of the patron saint's image and the singing of the Salve.
The festivities will continue on Monday, April 27th, with the Day of the Riberer, dedicated to this traditional figure, and on Tuesday, April 28th, with the Day dels Fadrins, which will include a paella contest, a humorous parade, and the Youth Night.
The bous al carrer (bulls in the street) will take center stage from April 29th to May 1st, with bull runs, heifer releases, and children's activities. On Saturday, May 2nd, the Day of les Anyades will be celebrated, featuring a giant paella and intergenerational activities. The festivities will conclude on Sunday, May 3rd, with the Day of the Huitada, which will bring the final touch with religious acts, mascletà, and a closing musical show.
Throughout the festive program, Violet Points will be installed on several days, especially during night events, to reinforce prevention and ensure safe festivities free from sexist aggressions. The Benissa City Council invites residents and visitors to participate in these celebrations, which represent a display of the town's deep roots and festive character.
