“"Since the arrival of the Popular Party to the autonomous institutions, the Generalitat has not allocated any investment to Xàtiva. Not a single euro. And far from reversing this situation, the decision to terminate the agreement represents another grievance to our city. After leaving the new Palace of Justice without funding, they now want to eliminate the rehabilitation of Santa Clara, one of the most important BIC buildings in our city. That is the respect the PP has for local heritage."

The Generalitat Valenciana has initiated proceedings to terminate its agreement with the Xàtiva City Council for the rehabilitation of the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara, demanding the return of 399,265.56 euros already disbursed, plus late payment interest.
This decision, officially communicated on Monday, April 7, 2026, has prompted a strong rejection from the Xàtiva council, which warns of severe detriment to municipal interests and the halting of a strategic project that was already underway with imminent construction.
According to municipal sources, the funds now claimed by the Generalitat have already been invested in drafting a comprehensive project, developed by architects Ramón Esteve and Carlos Campos. This proposal respects the heritage value of the monastery, declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), and aims to provide it with new cultural uses.
The local government considers the autonomous administration's decision “incomprehensible”, especially since the agreement was still in force and the City Council had been awaiting a new agreement announced by the Generalitat itself since last December. This lack of response, according to the council, creates uncertainty and forces it to solely bear the financing of a key action for the city's heritage.
Councillor Ignacio Reig emphasized that the Santa Clara rehabilitation project is emblematic for the revitalization of a building that was practically in ruins when acquired by the City Council, and which could now house two crucial public services that would boost the economy of Xàtiva and its old town. The City Council will present allegations within the established deadline to defend the city's interests and ensure the project's continuity.
