The jury of the XVII International Ceramics Biennial of Manises (BICM) 2026 has convened to select the winning pieces, following an edition that set a new participation record with 486 works from 345 artists representing 49 countries.

This figure is particularly significant as it marks the first year that the competition rules stipulate each work can only be entered into one of two categories: artistic creation or design. The Manises City Council highlighted the remarkable international response, with Spain leading participation with 215 works, followed by Poland (22), France (20), Italy (18), and Germany. Countries such as China and the United Kingdom also stood out with 14 works each, Turkey with 12, and Argentina, Brazil, and Serbia with eleven pieces respectively, reaffirming the global nature of the event.
The jury, composed of prominent figures in design and art, made their decision from the fifty works that passed the qualifying phase. Their verdict is final, and they have the authority to grant special mentions or, if deemed necessary, declare a prize void. The final decision will be announced on May 8, coinciding with the inauguration of the Biennial. The finalist works will be exhibited in the Los Filtros de Manises hall until July 31.

"The XVII International Ceramics Biennial of Manises once again demonstrates its status as a global benchmark in the sector. The high participation not only highlights the prestige of the event but also the vitality and attractiveness of Manises in the field of contemporary ceramics."

Xavier Morant · Councillor for Culture and Promotion of Ceramics of Manises City Council
The Biennial, promoted by the Manises City Council, is structured into artistic ceramics and ceramic product design categories, aiming to foster contemporary creation and project Manises internationally as a sector leader. The competition offers a total prize fund of 16,000 euros, distributed in two awards for the artistic category (8,000 and 4,000 euros) and one for design (4,000 euros). The awarded works will become part of the collection of the Manises Ceramics Museum.
Councillor Xavier Morant emphasized the high quality of the submitted pieces, which made the jury's task "particularly demanding." He also added that this high participation gains even more value as it is the first year with the new system of differentiated categories.
