The Commissioner for Recovery of the Generalitat, Raúl Mérida, visited the municipality of Picanya for the closure of this facility. He emphasized the Generalitat's role as a leader in reconstruction and a strategic ally for localities affected by the DANA on October 29.
This intervention is part of the autonomous plan to support local councils, launched to help municipalities cope with the high cleaning costs. Initially, a first phase involved removing waste directly generated by the floods, followed by a second phase for debris resulting from reconstruction.
“"The Generalitat has expanded this initial plan and has come to the rescue of the affected municipalities, managing a new batch of waste derived from the reconstruction process."
In this second phase, involving 19 municipalities, an investment of 40 million euros has been allocated by the Third Vice-Presidency and Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure, Territory and Recovery. This amount adds to the 224 million euros already invested by the Generalitat in removing over one million tons of waste across all affected localities.
Specifically in Picanya, the Generalitat has invested 6.35 million euros in the bulky waste management operation. Of this figure, 6.1 million were allocated to removing over 25,000 tons from the entire municipality, and 275,000 euros to emptying and cleaning the collection points, where 4,100 tons had accumulated.
Currently, the removal of reconstruction waste has been completed in 12 of the 19 participating municipalities, representing 63% of the total, with seven localities still pending. For these tasks, the Generalitat has collaborated with the same concessionary companies for municipal waste management, ensuring a rapid and effective response. Once these actions are completed, local councils will directly resume managing their waste.
Under the Pla Endavant, the Generalitat has allocated over 50 million euros to direct actions in Picanya. These include debris removal, reconstruction of the Torrent-Picanya collector through the Public Entity for Wastewater Sanitation of the Valencian Community (Epsar), repair of rural roads, cleaning work in homes, actions in educational centers, and direct aid to citizens. Additionally, indirect investments such as the 140 million euros for the recovery of Metrovalencia are included.
