“"Combating unwanted loneliness and food insecurity is not just a social issue, it is a public health priority. When we rebuild intergenerational bonds and strong support networks, we are also rebuilding healthy lifestyle habits and autonomy for our seniors."

The organization Action Against Hunger has launched the ‘Nutriendo Lazos’ program in Albal, Catarroja, Picanya, and Sedaví, a community initiative to combat unwanted loneliness and food insecurity among vulnerable individuals aged 65 and over, particularly those affected by the DANA.
The intervention, developed in collaboration with the four town councils, will reach over 120 seniors in municipalities within the Horta Sud region. The program will revitalize community spaces to serve as meeting points for workshops on healthy eating, rest, emotional well-being, physical and cognitive activation, as well as intergenerational activities aimed at strengthening social support networks.
The initiative will run for one year and is aimed at both individuals over 65 residing in any of the four municipalities and caregivers of elderly or dependent family members seeking guidance and psychosocial support. According to Action Against Hunger data, unwanted loneliness affects over 20% of people over 75 in Spain, directly impacting their health and food security, further exacerbated by the risk of poverty affecting one in five individuals over 65.
The project includes the refurbishment and revitalization of community spaces, the mobilization of social agents and neighborhood networks, and the promotion of more inclusive, healthy, and resilient environments for the elderly population. Interested individuals can register through the assigned technical teams in Albal, Catarroja, Picanya, and Sedaví.
‘Nutriendo Lazos’ is part of Action Against Hunger's comprehensive response to the DANA emergency, funded by the Valencian Government's Ministry of Social Services, Family and Childhood, as well as Valencian Cooperation, in collaboration with the participating town councils.
