The Castle of Albalat dels Sorells will mend a patrimonial wound of over 50 years with the restoration of its dependencies and the return of the emblematic ceramic pavements, known as "escarabatets".

The Albalat dels Sorells City Council has launched the restoration of several dependencies of the Castle, with the aim of returning the "escarabatets", the ceramic pavements that were removed from their original rooms during a controversial intervention in the 1970s. This action represents the definitive rescue of pieces ranging from the 15th to the 18th century that have survived decades of oblivion and changes of location.
The history of these pieces is one of an almost desperate rescue. In the 1970s, the Castle was on the verge of being demolished to build a new town hall, a project only halted by the intervention of the Diputación de Valencia. However, during those consolidation works, the original pavements were removed without a conservation plan.
It was the official chronicler who decided to intervene on his own to prevent the ceramics from ending up in a landfill. With municipal support at the time, he cleaned and classified the tiles one by one, storing them in wooden orange boxes. That was the refuge of a Gothic treasure that, for fifty years, has changed warehouses and was even considered lost for a time.
The relevance of the current project is based on the quality of the recovered material. In a subsequent cataloging, more than 500 Gothic pieces were identified, preserved in optimal condition. Until now, these ceramics have remained guarded in the municipal archive, awaiting an intervention that would return them to their original context.
With the execution of this project, Albalat dels Sorells rehabilitates a physical structure and restores its collective memory. The return of the "escarabatets" to the pavement of the Castle puts an end to a half-century journey and finally recognizes the value of one of the most unique Gothic ceramic collections in the region.
