The teaching camp set up in València's Plaza de la Mare de Déu on Sunday reclaimed the space it occupied before the central events of Corpus Christi, just moments after the procession ended. Participants in the protest, linked to the indefinite strike in public education, had moved to a side of the square four days prior to allow the celebration to proceed.
The overlap between the teachers' demands and the city's main religious festival was also evident during the procession. Several members of the camp participated in the route, raising their vests as authorities passed in a symbolic gesture to demand labor improvements and a firm commitment to public education. According to the initiative's organizers, the action received expressions of support from some of the attending public.
The mobilization has been active since last Monday in the Plaza de la Mare de Déu. The teachers have repeatedly stated that they have taken all necessary measures to reconcile the protest with the Corpus events and avoid interference with a celebration they consider part of Valencian cultural heritage.
The continuation of the camp comes after several days of debate over the occupation of the square. The association Amics del Corpus had requested that the space be completely clear during the weekend, while the campers argued that their temporary relocation allowed the festival to proceed normally without abandoning their demands.
