A large demonstration of teachers has marched through the streets of Valencia today, exactly one month after the indefinite strike, which they have now decided to suspend. The march began in front of the Regional Ministry of Education, where union representatives once again rejected the proposals from the Regional Government (Consell), and proceeded towards the Plaza de la Mare de Déu. The objective is to warn that they will continue mobilizing until their demands are met. “We will not stop, we want public and quality education,” proclaimed the participants.
Several columns of teachers set off at 12:00 PM from the Campanar department, where a new negotiation table was held throughout the morning. They were led by a music band that gave a festive tone to the protest. At the head of the procession were representatives from the three organizing unions, STEPV, Comisiones, and UGT, carrying a banner with the slogan “Consellera, resign”.
According to the unions, the suspension of the indefinite strike is a “strategic interruption” that allows them to stop striking but continue with protest actions. Furthermore, they warn that, if necessary, they will resume the work stoppage at any time without prior notice.
The teachers wore their usual green t-shirts in defense of public education and yellow vests with the slogan ‘teacher working in precarious conditions’. They displayed posters with slogans such as “We will continue in the streets until they listen to us”, “We don’t want scraps”, “More resources and fewer speeches”, and “There were no braver teachers in Valencia than us”.
Throughout the march, slogans were heard such as “We don’t want this precariousness anymore, we want quality education”, “We don’t want more cuts in health and education”, “The fight is the only way”, and “A teacher fighting is also teaching”.
