The arrival of spring in Valencia brings longer days and increased natural light, benefiting visual health, but also heightens ultraviolet radiation, making proper eye protection essential.
Specialists from the Ophthalmology Service at Hospital Vithas Valencia Turia emphasize that natural light is a key element for a healthy life. Spending time outdoors not only promotes physical activity and improves mood but also helps regulate circadian rhythms. For children and adolescents, scientific evidence has linked outdoor time with a lower risk of developing myopia, an increasingly common visual problem.
“
"The beginning of spring is an excellent time to incorporate routines that promote visual health, especially in children and adolescents, who spend many hours on close-up tasks and in front of screens."
Despite the benefits, experts warn that ultraviolet (UV) radiation begins to intensify during spring. Between April and May, UV indices in the Valencian Community typically reach levels between 6 and 8, considered high by organizations such as the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Accumulated exposure without adequate protection can lead to eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or pterygium.
For effective protection, the use of approved sunglasses with UV400 filters is recommended, blocking 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB radiation. It is crucial to choose frames that cover the eyes well and are comfortable for prolonged use. Polarized lenses are particularly useful for driving and in environments with high glare, while orange or copper lenses enhance contrast in sports activities, though they do not replace UV protection.
“
"When buying glasses, it is worth asking the optician about the UV filter, polarization, and the most suitable lens type depending on whether they will be used in the city or at the beach, for driving or for sports."
The Ophthalmology team at Hospital Vithas Valencia Turia emphasizes that spring is an ideal opportunity to promote more outdoor play, physical activity, and less screen time, especially in childhood. These habits, combined with adequate visual protection, are fundamental for healthy visual development. Consulting an ophthalmologist can help resolve doubts about ocular photoprotection and the choice of appropriate glasses.
