The Clinical Laboratory of the Sant Joan d’Alacant University Hospital has provided training to over 80 professionals from Spain and Portugal through the university course “Bases for the digital transformation of clinical laboratories”. This micro-credential, organized by the Miguel Hernández University of Elche together with the Spanish Society of Laboratory Medicine, has become a national and international reference point in healthcare innovation.
The success in participation has prompted organizers to explore new training proposals, including future university expert programs in healthcare digital transformation. Dr. Emilio Flores, Head of the Clinical Laboratory Service at the hospital, highlighted that "the laboratory is the largest producer of digital data in the entire healthcare system and generates the highest quality information". He emphasized the importance of interrelating laboratory data with clinical records to improve patient care.
The course offers an academic, scientific, and practical view of the technological foundations of the 21st-century laboratory, covering topics such as automation, interoperability, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital transformation strategies. It is based on real experiences, demonstrating how these tools improve diagnoses and personalize treatments.
The training is conducted in a blended learning format, combining online classes with an in-person session for exchanging experiences and fostering collaboration networks among professionals from different centers and regions in Spain and Portugal. "We want to generate networking and experience spaces among centers from different regions," stated the head of the Clinical Laboratory.
This initiative is part of the European university micro-credentials, funded by the European Union, aimed at active professionals to enhance skills in strategic areas. Through this project, the Sant Joan d’Alacant University Hospital reinforces its leadership in healthcare digital transformation.
