This date serves to acknowledge the Roma people's contribution to society and, at the same time, to keep alive the historical memory of the persecutions suffered, such as those during World War II. Francisco Santiago, head of the Federation of Roma Associations of the Comunitat Valenciana (FAGA), emphasized the importance of remembering these events to prevent their recurrence.
“"It is fundamental to remember so that it never happens again, neither to Roma people nor to anyone else."
The Roma associative movement also focuses on current challenges, especially in areas such as housing, education, and employment integration. Representatives of the community call for more public policies and specific measures that facilitate real and effective integration into society.
As part of this commemoration, the Diputación de València hosted a meeting with Roma associations on Tuesday, April 7. The president of the Diputación, Vicent Mompó, defended collaborative work with these entities and stressed the need to reduce school dropout rates and improve employment integration to ensure a dignified life for the Roma people.
In Castelló de la Plana, the day on Wednesday, April 8, includes a series of institutional, cultural, and coexistence activities open to all citizens. The Councilor for Interculturality, Vicent Sales, highlighted the relevance of the Roma people in the city's history and present, as well as their fundamental contribution. The institutional event at the City Council will include the reading of the manifesto and the Roma anthem Gelem Gelem, followed by workshops, community activities, and music. Concurrently, Alicante has also joined the commemoration with awareness campaigns and coexistence activities to highlight the reality of the Roma people and combat stereotypes.
