The Valencia City Council has initiated the second major phase of cleaning and restoring the historic 'ninots indultats' (pardoned figures), both large and small, housed in the Fallas Museum. The work is expected to be fully completed next summer. According to Santiago Ballester, the Councillor for Fallas and President of the Junta Central Fallera, this new intervention continues a first phase started last year, which already addressed 21 ninots and performed deep cleaning on 45 other pieces. The goal is to recover dozens of historical figures before the arrival of the new ninots in 2026.
This second stage of the project will focus specifically on emblematic figures from different eras of the festival's history. For the large ninots, figures from a total of 18 years have been selected: 1940, 1945, 1948, 1950, 1954, 1968, 1971, 1975, 1990, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2017. The intervention will also restore several children's ninots from the years 1971, 1974, 1975, 1991, 1999, 2015, and 2016.
The restoration efforts are focused on addressing problems arising from the passage of time, humidity, and material wear, considering that these figures were originally created as ephemeral works intended to be burned in the 'cremà' and not preserved for decades. To restore the figures to their maximum possible splendor while respecting their original aesthetics, restorers are carrying out deep cleaning, repairing damage, recovering lost pieces, correcting pigmentation issues, and reconstructing missing elements.
The Fallas Museum of Valencia has housed large 'ninots indultats' since 1934 and children's ones since 1963, offering a visual journey through the artistic, social, and cultural evolution of the Fallas. Each piece reflects the humor, thought, and customs of the era in which it was saved from the fire by popular vote. In addition to these figures, the museum's facilities also hold the official Fallas posters since 1929, portraits of the 'falleras mayores' (chief festival queens), and various historical Fallas insignias—a heritage collection that the council aims to consolidate comprehensively and coherently for future generations and visitors.
