The Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe in València coordinates the largest research network for acute myeloid leukemia, involving over 300 centers and 1,000 researchers across Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, to enhance diagnosis and therapies.

This international network, coordinated by the Acute Leukemia Unit at Hospital La Fe, has established a far-reaching scientific infrastructure. It includes patient registries and advanced diagnostic systems that accelerate understanding of the disease and the development of new therapies.
Over the past ten years, this collaboration has provided an extensive scientific infrastructure, driving more than 120 clinical trials. As a result, over 1,500 patients have gained access to innovative treatments before their approval, improving their therapeutic options, as stated by the Generalitat in a press release.
Hospital La Fe is the center that treats the most patients with acute myeloid leukemia annually in Spain, with between 80 and 100 new diagnoses each year. Additionally, in 2025, it received approximately 100 patients referred from other Spanish centers for alternative treatments not available in their home hospitals.

"Advancing new targeted and precision therapies is key to improving survival and reducing the adverse effects of current treatments, especially in a disease with a still limited prognosis."

This intensive research activity in acute leukemias has led to nearly 200 clinical trials conducted in the last decade and dozens of studies currently underway in various phases. This work is complemented by more than 200 national and international projects focusing on areas such as epidemiology, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and precision diagnostics.

"This research activity has a direct impact on patient health, by improving diagnosis and offering early access to innovative therapies. Furthermore, it contributes to the sustainability of the healthcare system through resource optimization and the extension of excellence standards beyond our immediate environment."

The research network comprises clinical professionals and researchers from numerous healthcare centers. Its objective is to promote hematology research projects that expand knowledge of blood diseases, especially leukemias and myeloma, improve their diagnosis, and develop more effective and innovative treatments that increase patient survival and quality of life.
