The filmmaker will visit Valencia to attend the opening gala, which will take place on Friday, May 15 at 6:30 PM at the Teatre El Musical (TEM). During this event, he will receive the DocsValencia Award in recognition of his career, marked by a committed view of social reality and his ability to connect with audiences through stories of global reach.
In addition to collecting the award and presenting his films, Gertten will use his stay in the city to shoot new footage as part of a developing cinematic project.
“"Having Fredrik Gertten at the tenth edition is an opportunity to bring to the Valencian public a filmography that dialogues with some of the great challenges of our time."
Among the scheduled activities is the masterclass Sifting the Focus, an open public event to be held on Monday, May 18 at 7:00 PM at the Col·legi Major Rector Peset. In this session, Gertten will discuss the creative process in documentary cinema and reflect on the role of film as a tool to influence public discourse.
The retrospective, titled Sifting the Focus, brings together four of his most influential works, which will be screened at La Filmoteca. The public can see Push (2019), focusing on the global housing crisis and real estate speculation, on Saturday, May 16 at 7:30 PM; Breaking Social (2023), his most recent work on the deterioration of the social contract, on Sunday, May 17 at 6:00 PM; Big Boys Gone Bananas! (2011), documenting the legal battle he faced with the multinational Dole Food Company, on Tuesday, May 19 at 8:00 PM; and Bikes vs Cars (2015), an analysis of the urban model and its impact on the climate crisis, on Wednesday, May 20 at 6:00 PM.
This retrospective has been made possible through collaboration between DocsValencia, the Aula de Cinema of the Universitat de València, and the DocsBarcelona festival.
