The association Amics del Corpus has requested that the Plaza de la Mare de Déu in Valencia, where the camp in support of the public education strike has been located since Monday, be completely cleared during the events scheduled for the weekend. Spokespersons for the camp, on the other hand, have defended that they have implemented "all possible measures" to avoid obstructing the Corpus Christi festival, which takes place from Friday to Sunday in this location.
Amics del Corpus believes that the current location of the camp, relocated on Wednesday to one end of the same square to allow for the celebration, does not resolve the issue. Francisco Esteve, president of the festive entity, stated that it is "essential and indispensable" to have the entire square available to develop a program that, as he recalled, they have been preparing for two years, coinciding with the 700th anniversary of the celebration's history. Esteve made these statements after delivering the traditional Corpus flower bouquet to the mayoress of Valencia, María José Catalá.
The representative of Amics del Corpus explained that in recent days he has held conversations with the organizers of the teachers' camp set up in the square and has asked for "common sense" to facilitate the development of the events. For their part, in a statement, the teachers' assembly wanted to "make it clear" that they are "profoundly committed to coexistence and respect for the cultural expressions of Valencian society," as evidenced by the fact that they have taken "all possible measures to avoid obstructing the correct development of the celebration."
The campers criticize the City Council for its management. "We reject, in this way, the spurious and interested use that the Valencia City Council is making, both of the educational community and of a festival that is the heritage of the entire city, with the aim of delegitimizing and wearing down initiatives in favor of public education such as the one being carried out in the Plaza de la Mare de Déu," they reproach.
Furthermore, they also emphasize that they are awaiting a solution to their demands. "The possibility of resolving the conflict that exists with the teaching staff and their representatives continues to be in the hands of the Conselleria d'Educació (Regional Ministry of Education)," they assure. In this regard, Amics del Corpus also remains pending the negotiations. Esteve explained that he hopes to know the outcome of the meeting to determine if a solution is found that allows the teachers' demands to be compatible with the celebration of the central Corpus events.
"We need mobility and to be able to work peacefully," indicated Esteve. The proposal from Amics del Corpus involves the camp temporarily leaving the square on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. "The only thing we asked for was to be able to leave the square clean," he stated, adding that participants could return once the Sunday procession concluded. Amics del Corpus argues that the festival attracts tens of thousands of people to the historic center of the city each year. According to data provided by the association, last year's edition drew between 150,000 and 160,000 attendees between the Cavalcada del Convit and the afternoon procession.
