This event, focused on hydrogeology and the importance of groundwater, took place in the area surrounding the Mijares River and the Fuente de Los Baños. The activity, organized to commemorate World Water Day, included a free guided itinerary led by specialists.
The day was organized by a hydrogeologist from the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, and featured the participation of professionals from the University of Valencia, Jaume I University, and Facsa. The latter entity, along with the Montanejos City Council, collaborated in the initiative.
The Hidrogeodía 2026 route showcased the great natural and water heritage of inland Castellón, especially the spring system associated with the Fuente de Los Baños and the Mijares River as it passes through Montanejos. The proposal revolved around the role of groundwater in this enclave, its relationship with the riverbed and the rock formations of the area, such as travertines, in an informative itinerary lasting about four hours.
During the visit, topics such as the functioning of aquifers, the formation of caves, sinkholes, and travertines, and the relevance of groundwater for human supply, economic activity, and ecosystem conservation were addressed. The event brought together more than fifty participants in a provincial-level gathering that reinforces the natural value of the Fuente de Los Baños and the section of the Mijares River.
Hidrogeodía is an initiative promoted by the Spanish Group of the International Association of Hydrogeologists, which this year has been held in over forty locations across Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. The activity in Montanejos had the collaboration of the Montanejos City Council, Facsa, the CSIC, and the IGME.
