The Alt Maestrat region is preparing for the fourth edition of the Xalar Festival in 2026, a performing arts event that solidifies its presence as a cultural reference in rural areas.

The Xalar Festival, held at the beginning of spring, has established itself as an essential cultural event in the region. Its program for this fourth edition articulates contemporary creation, experimentation, innovation, and popular culture, with a strong humorous component to address themes such as identity, diversity, the present and future of youth, and the impact of social media.
Activities will begin in Benassal with the intergenerational workshop-show Collage-Acción, by Macarena Recuerda Shepherd. Following this, the dance company Marroch will present Trópico, recognized as the best street arts show at the Valencian Performing Arts Awards 2023. Friday's events will conclude with the contemporary cabaret Quería ser maricón pero nací sudaca, by Mazorra, a proposal combining humor, music, and reflection on identity and migration.
On Saturday, the program will move to La Serratella with the comedy Paco Panjabi, by Suso Imbernón, offering a humorous look at yoga classes in the region. In Albocàsser, the afternoon will continue with Las Preciosas Ridículas, a contemporary adaptation of Molière's classic by the company Arroz con costra, and with Paloma de Parque, a comedic monologue by Clara Ingold.
The festival will culminate on Sunday in Vilar de Canes with Domini Públic, by Roger Bernat, an internationally recognized participatory scenic piece that turns the audience into protagonists. Launched in 2023, the Xalar Festival stands out for its youth participation, as the program has been designed by a group of young people from the region who select the shows through an open call.
In addition to the performances, the festival includes various activities to strengthen ties between towns and performing arts, with the participation of over twenty educational entities, associations, and local producers. The event is supported by the Diputación de Castellón, the Daniel y Nina Carasso Foundation, and the town councils of Benassal, Albocàsser, La Serratella, and Vilar de Canes. All activities are free.
