A 61-year-old woman has died and another, aged 79, has been seriously injured in a traffic accident that occurred this Wednesday on Sant Tomàs street in Alcoy, according to health sources.

The Information and Coordination Center for Emergencies (CICU) received the alert about the incident around 3:00 PM and dispatched a Medical Emergency Aid Service (SAMU) unit and a Basic Life Support (SVB) unit to the scene.
Health services attended to both women involved in the collision. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers were performed on the older woman without success, and her death was confirmed. The younger woman was transported by the SVB ambulance to Alcoy Hospital with multiple injuries.
The Councilor for Security in Alcoy, Raül Llopis, explained that they are investigating the "strange incident," focusing on the car's speed and how it ended up hitting a person after uprooting two trees and breaking a marble stone from a lamppost base.
According to the councilor, the investigation will examine whether, as it was an automatic car, the woman may have confused the accelerator with the brake.
