The L'Alcora City Council has consolidated a pioneering comprehensive management model for animal protection, becoming a benchmark in the Valencian Community thanks to its ethical and transversal approach.

This model, developed by the Animal Welfare area, works jointly with the shelters Huellas Callejeras and ADAA. Since May 2021, Huellas Callejeras has attended to nearly 500 animals, carrying out rescues in the urban area, industrial zones, and the surroundings of the town.
The promotion of responsible adoptions continues to grow, exceeding fifty between 2025 and early 2026. This demonstrates the sensitivity of the citizens and the success of the implemented dissemination and reception protocols.

"Our goal is that every step we take responds to the affection and responsibility that residents feel towards animals; we want management with soul, that lives up to this growing social sensitivity."

L'Alcora was the first municipality in the province and one of the first in the Valencian Community to award this service to a shelter. This was possible thanks to exhaustive work in drafting pioneering tender specifications, ensuring a model based on sensitivity, professionalism, and absolute respect for animal life, guaranteeing zero sacrifice and maximum protection.
At the end of 2025, the new service contract was formalized, again taken on by Huellas Callejeras. The work covers the entire process: from the collection of abandoned animals to their responsible adoption, with 24-hour care, 365 days a year, and response times of less than 90 minutes.
The model incorporates technical protocols that reinforce the quality of care, such as individual traceability of each animal through an electronic file, which allows for complete monitoring and permanent control of the service by the City Council. Additionally, it includes the dissemination of animals within a maximum of 48 hours, immediate veterinary attention, and the use of foster homes for better adaptation.
This global commitment is completed with mandatory sterilization to prevent abandonment and a responsible adoption process that includes interviews and subsequent follow-up. All of this under the unwavering principle of zero sacrifice and a determined commitment to citizen awareness, through campaigns and educational activities that promote responsible pet ownership and animal respect.
