The University of Alicante (UA) has consolidated its international projection, maintaining a prominent position in global academic rankings like the Shanghai Ranking, QS World University Rankings, and Times Higher Education (THE). These recognitions underscore the robustness of the institution's teaching, research, and knowledge transfer quality.
The UA consistently ranks across multiple international classifications, both globally and by subject area. Factors such as research quality, internationalization, knowledge transfer, and graduate employability underpin this external recognition. While rankings should be interpreted with caution, they serve as a global showcase that enhances university visibility and prestige.
Francisco Torres Alfosea, UA's Vice-Rector for Studies and Quality, notes that "our presence in them is a clear indicator that the University of Alicante is doing things right in many key areas," while also emphasizing the importance of understanding their methodological limitations.
In the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), the UA is placed in the 601-700 band globally and ranks between 15th and 19th within the Spanish university system. It particularly excels in areas such as Tourism and Hotel Management (45th worldwide), Chemistry (201-300), Ecology and Chemical Engineering (301-400), and Economics (401-500).
The QS World University Rankings positions the UA in the 781-790 global range. By subject, it stands out in Nursing (151-225), Environmental Sciences (351-400), and Chemical Engineering (401-450). It also appears in Arts and Humanities (501-550), Medicine, and Computer Science and Information Systems. The UA also features in the Top Under 50 ranking (101-150) and the European ranking (266), as well as the QS Sustainability Rankings 2026 (426 global).
Meanwhile, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking places the UA in the 1001-1200 global band. By subject, its Law program ranks among the top 251-300, followed by Arts and Humanities (301-400) and Education (401-500). In the young university ranking, the UA is positioned 251-300. In the THE Impact Rankings 2025, it is in the 401-600 global band, with notable results in Affordable and Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (101-200).
Torres Alfosea highlights that the UA's sustained presence in these three main international rankings validates its academic and scientific quality over time. He emphasizes the cross-cutting nature of the results across multiple disciplines and methodologies, as well as the efficiency in resource utilization, which allows the UA to compete with universities with larger budgets.
The University of Alicante has expanded its educational offerings with over a dozen new programs in the last five years, including degrees such as Speech Therapy, Artificial Intelligence Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Medicine.
