The name of Trinidad Amorós, councilwoman and deputy spokesperson for the socialist municipal group in Alicante, has been put forward as a potential consensus candidate to lead the PSPV in the city's mayoral race. This option would emerge as a third way against the aspirations of the current spokesperson, Ana Barceló, and the deputy José Díaz, who is also reportedly favored by the regional leadership.
The PSPV's objective is to form a consensus candidacy that avoids primary elections. Initially, the party leadership planned a complete renewal of the list, with José Díaz as the main candidate, who took over as spokesperson for the local caretaker committee after Miguel Millana's resignation. However, Díaz's prominence has diminished, while Ana Barceló's has grown, particularly following the VPP Les Naus housing scandal.
Despite Ana Barceló's increased profile, José Díaz maintains significant support from the regional leadership and the PSPV parliamentary group, securing him a place among the potential mayoral candidates. The uncertainty lies in whether Barceló will express her desire to run again, which would go against the PSPV leadership's initial plans for a total renewal.
Should the regional leadership maintain its support for José Díaz and Ana Barceló persist with her ambitions, Trinidad Amorós could emerge as the option with the broadest consensus. Amorós, a trusted figure of Barceló, served as her chief of staff at the Ministry of Health and is currently the deputy spokesperson. Her career includes being a regional deputy, an advisor at the Government's sub-delegation, and mayor of Guadalest.
The socialist political situation in Alicante awaits the internal calendar for candidate selection, which will be approved by the federal committee. The main names on the table are Díaz, Barceló, and Amorós, with expectations influenced by the consequences of the Les Naus case. While this initially boosted PSOE's optimism due to potential PP desgaste, subsequent scandals have affected their outlook.
