Thousands of people took to the streets of Alicante this Friday, May 1st, to demand decent wages, easier access to housing, and improved public services, during a day of union mobilization.

The march, organized by UGT and CCOO, began around 11:00 AM from the steps of the IES Jorge Juan. It followed the traditional route along Alfonso el Sabio, concluding at Avenida de la Rambla, without any incidents reported.
The main banner of the demonstration bore the slogan "Rights, not trenches. Wages, housing, and democracy," reflecting the primary demands. Additionally, references were made to ending the wars in Iran and Ukraine, addressing job insecurity, and the need to diversify the provincial productive fabric, which is overly exposed to tourism and the service sector.

"The unions have pointed out that this May Day is celebrated in a favorable context in these regions, with a reduction in unemployment of more than 6.5% in the last year and more than 51,000 affiliates to Social Security in l'Alcoià and el Comtat."

Aside from the mobilization in Alicante, which had the support of progressive parties such as the PSOE, Compromís, and Esquerra Unida, demonstrations were also held in other towns in the province. In Elche, the march focused on the industrial situation, especially in the footwear sector, and on occupational risk prevention. Similar demands were heard in Elda and Petrer, where the reform of dismissals and the reduction of working hours were highlighted.
In l'Alcoià-Comtat, the commemoration was concentrated in Alcoy, with a joint demonstration by CCOO and UGT that gathered about 500 people. After a popular breakfast, the march ended in Plaça d'Espanya, where the manifesto was read. The demands included the gender gap, decent wages, professional training in industry, and the defense of quality public services, with criticisms of the PP's policy in the Generalitat.
Platforms such as Salvem l'Aqüífer del Molinar and Colla Ecologista La Carrasca also joined the day, advocating for water protection against the proposed development of the Alcoy Sur business park, which could pose a risk of filtration to the city's main aquifer.
