The patient is under monitoring after having traveled on the same plane as a person who later died from hantavirus, and also due to her participation in the cruise MV Hondius. The sample was registered at the reference center at three in the morning on Friday, and PCR test results are expected to be available within 24 to 48 hours.
The woman was admitted on Thursday to a hospital in the province of Alicante, where she is in an isolation room with negative pressure. She presents mild respiratory symptoms, mainly coughing.
According to the protocol established by the Ministry of Health, if the first PCR is negative, a second test will be repeated 24 hours later. If this second PCR is also negative, the woman would be considered a contact in quarantine and transferred to the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid. If the result is positive, she would be evacuated to the High-Level Isolation and Treatment Unit of La Fe Hospital in Valencia.
The General Directorate of Public Health of the Regional Health Department contacted the patient on Thursday after receiving an alert through the European Alert System and in coordination with the Ministry of Health. She was transferred from her home to the hospital in an ambulance equipped with safety measures, and once there, taken to the isolation room in a negative pressure capsule and via a separate circuit.
The Regional Health Department has assured that it has mobilized all necessary resources to guarantee the safety and epidemiological surveillance of both the population and healthcare personnel, and will continue to report on the evolution of the case.
