A recent intervention on 20 meters of La Gloria street, closed to traffic with horizontal signs and bollards, has been described as insufficient by residents. This measure, which does not address the underlying urban problems, contrasts with the need for comprehensive redevelopment to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.
“"San Antón needs an integral plan with a single platform, because it is a neighborhood where everything is out of regulation."
Mobility is a critical problem in the neighborhood, which features a labyrinthine layout and extremely narrow sidewalks, some less than 70 centimeters wide. This situation hinders pedestrian traffic, especially for the elderly population, and violates national regulations that establish a minimum clear space of 180 centimeters for pedestrians.
In addition to the lack of accessibility, residents express concern about the proliferation of tourist apartments and the presence of empty lots, which contribute to the degradation of the neighborhood. The neighborhood leadership has requested a traffic light intersection at the neighborhood's exit towards Jaime II Avenue to improve circulation.
“"My mother is elderly and walks with crutches. Since the sidewalks are narrow, she always has to walk in the road."
A redevelopment project with an investment of 1.4 million euros to create a single platform in Misericordia Square and several streets, presented in the previous mandate, was halted. Residents fear that, instead of comprehensive solutions, regulated parking will be implemented, which could generate more conflicts in the neighborhood.
