The Regional Secretary of Culture, Marta Alonso, inaugurated the exhibition, accompanied by the Director General of Culture, Ignacio Prieto. Alonso emphasized that the exhibition "projects the universal figure of an Alicantinian who brought humanist thought and values to various fields of knowledge and public life," underscoring the Generalitat's commitment to making documentary heritage accessible to citizens.
Organized by the General Directorate of Culture, the exhibition is part of the International Archives Week and features the documentary legacy of Rafael Altamira for the first time. This collection, recently incorporated into the provincial archive, was held for decades under the custody of the IES Jorge Juan. Its incorporation "guarantees its conservation and facilitates access to fundamental documentation for understanding our intellectual history," stated Alonso.
The exhibition reviews the personal and intellectual trajectory of Altamira, recognized as a historian, jurist, educator, diplomat, and peace advocate. Visitors can discover original documents, photographs, publications, correspondence, historical press, and audiovisual resources, as well as his relationships with prominent cultural and political figures of his time.
The project, which has collaborated with numerous national and international institutions, dedicates specific sections to Altamira's intellectual and political networks, his connection with the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, pedagogical renewal, contemporary historiography, Europeanism, and international cooperation. It also addresses his work at the Permanent Court of International Justice in The Hague and his exile.
Incorporating educational and immersive resources for all ages, the Conselleria d'Educació, Cultura i Universitats reinforces its commitment to the conservation, research, and dissemination of Valencian documentary heritage, while promoting knowledge of key figures in history and culture.
