This project, presented at the Alicante City Council, involves a public investment of 420 million euros and has been described as “historic” by the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, the President of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, and the Mayor, Luis Barcala. The three administrations are working together to make a long-held aspiration of the city a reality.
The Central Park envisions a more united city, with a green corridor over two kilometers long that will connect the Vía Parque with the Plaza de la Estrella. This large green lung will link neighborhoods such as San Blas, Benalúa, Alipark, and Ciudad de Asís, areas that have coexisted separated by train tracks for years.
“"The railway ceases to be a barrier and becomes an opportunity."
The project is not limited to green spaces; it also includes 220,000 square meters of developable land, an intermodal station connecting train, tram, and buses, and the preservation of beloved symbols for Alicante residents, such as the Puente Rojo (Red Bridge) and the centenary ficus trees in the Plaza de la Estrella. The train tracks will not disappear but will be covered with elevated platforms that will become new spaces for walking and enjoyment.
Furthermore, President Juanfran Pérez Llorca has announced that the surface parking next to the future TRAM station will be transformed into an underground one, freeing up space for the park. An investment of 102 million euros will also be made in the central tram station, which is scheduled to open in early 2029.
