The Socialist Municipal Group in Alicante City Council has urged the local government, led by the Popular Party, to withdraw the tender for renewing the management of the regulated parking service, known as ORA or blue zone, deeming it excessively focused on revenue collection.

The socialist spokesperson, Ana Barceló, expressed her concern, stating that Mayor Barcala aims to "make money and mortgage residents until the year 2045" with this tender. According to the PSOE, the proposal does not guarantee parking for residents in the new orange zones, as it will allow any vehicle to park upon payment.

"It is a fiscal robbery of Alicante families because it aims to collect 115% more for the blue zone, 40% more in fines, and 15% more for tow truck services."

These figures are based on the income forecasts included in the municipal budgets for 2026. Barceló also highlighted that the creation of 2,542 new orange zone spaces in neighborhoods such as Oliveretes-San Francisco, Ensanche-Mercado, Ensanche-Diputación, Benalúa Este-Alipark, Benalúa-Juzgados, Benalúa Sur, and Princesa Mercedes-Juzgados, faces "frontal rejection from residents" in these areas of Alicante.
The PSOE has announced that it will initiate a series of meetings with neighborhood associations to coordinate joint actions against this measure. Furthermore, they pointed out that there are more residents and vehicles than free spaces in the orange zone, and many families own more than one vehicle, without clarification on whether specific spaces will be provided for motorcycles.
The socialist party also emphasized that the expansion of paid parking not only affects the orange zone but also the blue zone, which will increase by 535 spaces. Additionally, the free parking period from 2 PM to 4 PM will be eliminated, and ORA hours will be extended to Saturday afternoons in some commercial areas. It has not yet been specified whether there will be bonuses for less polluting vehicles or for people with reduced mobility, although municipal sources confirmed that the new contract would include free parking for the latter group.
Finally, the socialist spokesperson reiterated that the project promoted by Mayor Barcala "will shield the blue and orange zones until 2045, mortgaging the administration for the next five legislative terms."
