The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif, has awarded 5.1 million euros for the drafting of projects for the second phase of the Torrellano bypass, completing the design of Alicante's new Railway Arterial Network.

This action, tendered in September 2025, focuses on a strategic section of the Mediterranean Corridor as it passes through the province of Alicante, between the capital and San Isidro. The high demand for transport on this axis, its connection with the Elche AV station, and its integration into the Trans-European Transport Networks make a restructuring necessary to improve the operational capacity and functionality of the infrastructure.
The project includes the duplication of several sections, the optimization of the connection between the Commuter and high-speed networks, and the enhancement of freight traffic. The Torrellano bypass will be designed in standard gauge (1,435 mm) and double electrified track for most of its route, allowing the circulation of both passenger trains (Commuter and Medium Distance) and freight trains.
The awarded projects will define a 10.3 km route, between Alicante station and the connection with the airport bypass —currently being drafted—. The initial section, about 2.5 km long, will run along the conventional Alicante–Villena line by installing a third rail on the existing infrastructure. From that point, the track will be duplicated and will be configured exclusively in standard gauge.
Likewise, the projects will include the connection branches with the Alicante–La Encina (towards Valencia) and Alicante–El Reguerón (towards Murcia) lines. Additionally, the project for the dismantling of the coastal railway line in the vicinity of the San Gabriel neighborhood will be drafted, except for the access branch to the Port. The project will include the removal of all railway installations: track, electrification, safety, and communications.
All actions are linked to the informative studies and environmental evaluations approved —or in consultation phase— by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. This intervention may be co-financed by the “Connecting Europe Facility” (CEF) mechanism of the European Union.
