The municipal group of the Popular Party in Elda City Council has registered a motion to improve accessibility and mobility in low emission zones (LEZ) and pedestrianized areas of the municipality.

The initiative aims to reconcile compliance with environmental regulations with the guarantee of the right to mobility and universal accessibility for residents. Popular councilor Mª Jesús García Viern presented the proposal at a press conference, noting that the implementation of low emission zones must be accompanied by planning that considers the needs of citizens, especially those with reduced mobility.
As she explained, there are currently difficulties in some pedestrianized areas of the urban center, including Juan Carlos I and Antonino Vera streets. The councilor stated that, after the pedestrianization of these roads, “there is no plan that allows access for people with reduced mobility,” which, she affirmed, is causing problems for residents in the area.

"Pedestrianization cannot imply a limitation on the right of residents to access their homes."

In this regard, she defended that low emission zones, mandatory under state regulations, must be developed through comprehensive planning that includes effective alternatives for citizens. Among the issues that the PP considers necessary to address are the lack of adequate loading and unloading areas and the absence of dissuasive parking lots that compensate for the elimination of parking spaces in the center.
For García Viern, this situation can affect both residents and commercial activity by hindering access to the urban center. The motion presented by the popular party includes a series of measures aimed at correcting these deficiencies. Among them, they propose replacing some physical access control elements with intelligent systems that allow for more agile management, improving the regulation of loading and unloading areas, studying new parking alternatives, and reinforcing public transport. They also propose guaranteeing residents' access to their homes and garages.
Finally, García Viern urged the governing team, formed by PSOE and Elda Para Todas, to study the proposal through consensus. “It is not only about complying with legal requirements, but about doing so responsibly, guaranteeing an accessible, orderly, and people-centered city,” she concluded.
