The union warns that this situation has had a direct impact on both citizens and public coffers, generating an avoidable cost. However, the Ministry of Health has justified the measure due to a deficit of radiologists, stating that they opted to guarantee patient diagnoses by resorting to these diversions and have managed to reduce waiting times to three months, down from the fourteen months at the beginning of the legislature.
CC OO highlights the two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines at Sagunto Hospital. One of them, acquired in 2023, did not become operational until March 2026, almost two years later. Furthermore, the union points out that as of today, no patients are scheduled for May, which creates uncertainty about the continuity of the service and the risk of a new shutdown. This situation, according to the union, demonstrates a serious lack of planning and utilization of public resources.
“"It is unacceptable to keep public equipment idle for years while spending on external referrals increases. We demand efficient management that prioritizes strengthening the public health system, with adequate staff and the utilization of available resources."
The current operation of the MRI equipment is considered insufficient, as it only operates from Monday to Friday, unlike other centers where hours are extended to reduce waiting lists. Regarding human resources, the union criticizes a deficient organization of personnel, as the nurse assigned to the commissioning of the equipment only works on MRI on Thursdays and Fridays, leaving the rest of the days without adequate coverage.
Additionally, the radiology position remains unfilled, compromising the stability of the service. In the radiodiagnosis service, there is only one Specialist Radiodiagnosis Technician (TER) on the night shift, compared to the two existing in hospitals of similar characteristics. To guarantee adequate minimum healthcare, the union considers it necessary to fill the radiology position and incorporate at least three specialist technical staff positions, which would allow for increased diagnostic activity, reduced waiting lists, and decreased referrals to private healthcare.
