Initial clearing and excavation work has already begun on the plot designated for the new WWTP, located north of the Camí Vell de la Mar, at the eastern end of the Parc Sagunt II urban development. This site is also near the future PowerCo battery plant.
The new plant will serve the municipalities of Estivella, Albalat dels Tarongers, Gilet, Petrés, and Sagunt, significantly improving wastewater management in this area. The project has a total budget of 50.77 million euros.
Funding for this significant undertaking comes from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) 2021-2027 Program, managed through the Water Sanitation Entity (EPSAR), which is part of the Ministry of Infrastructures.
In addition to the new WWTP construction, the project includes transforming the existing treatment plant into a wastewater pumping station (EBAR). This new station will be equipped with a storm tank, allowing for a better system response to heavy rainfall events. In this initial phase, up to 25 centimeters of soil are being removed.
The new WWTP will incorporate advanced tertiary treatment, which will increase the quality of the water discharged into the Marjal dels Moros. This improvement will facilitate water reuse, helping to reduce pressure on water resources for both agricultural and business sectors, thereby promoting the region's water sustainability.
