The department led by Ana Redondo has notified several religious entities that prohibit female presence in their processes. In addition to the Sagunto brotherhood, these include the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora Dolores in Córdoba, the Brotherhood of Santo Sepulcro in Aguilar de la Frontera (Córdoba), and the Brotherhood of El Silencio in Albacete.
Given this situation, the ministry has sent an official letter to both the affected brotherhoods and the city councils of the involved localities, demanding the revision of their statutes to ensure the inclusion of women on equal terms.
“"There is discrimination and a violation of essential constitutional rights and freedoms, also recognized in laws and jurisprudence."
In the specific case of Sagunto, and as the minister had already announced two weeks prior, the Spanish Government has finally sent an official letter to the Prosecutor's Office to denounce the refusal of the Brotherhood of the Purísima Sangre to admit women. This action is based on the consideration that the refusal constitutes a violation of fundamental rights.
Sources from the Ministry of Equality have recalled that in 2025 they sent an official letter to the brotherhood and the Valera de Abajo City Council (Cuenca) regarding the Moors and Christians festival, and in 2024 to the Marraja Brotherhood of Cartagena (Murcia) and its city council, demonstrating a pattern of intervention in similar cases.
