The lifeless bodies of several birds were found on Tuesday in a bundle near a secluded beach in Grau Vell, south of Port de Sagunt. The Local Police received a tip-off from a person who noticed a tightly bound bundle full of flies near the sea.
Upon opening the bundle, officers discovered the remains of dead animals, including what appeared to be a pair of roosters, a duck, a quail, and two gilthead bream, along with pieces of fruit such as coconut, orange, and lemon. Some of the birds were decapitated, and others showed signs of cuts on their necks.
Given this macabre discovery, the Local Police alerted officers from the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard, who arrived at the scene to inspect the bundle and collect evidence. The investigation aims to determine the circumstances of this potential animal cruelty crime.
The appearance of remains of slaughtered birds with coconut pieces around them is not new in Spain and has been linked to witchcraft rituals where animal sacrifice is used as an offering.
Therefore, it is not ruled out that the bundle found in Grau Vell is related to such a practice, as has occurred on other occasions on Valencian beaches where other decapitated animals have been found in similar contexts.
