The teaching collective in Dénia yesterday chose books as symbolic "weapons" to condemn the police aggression suffered by a female teacher last Sunday in València. Under the slogan "Reading is resisting," the teacher representatives began a calm march from La Glorieta to the Red Cross area, passing by the terraces on the city's main commercial artery.
Wearing their characteristic green t-shirts and carrying copies of literary works, the teachers aimed to highlight not only their condemnation of violence but also the problems affecting public education. In the fourth week of a general strike, the mobilization sought to make tourists aware that Dénia is not just a tourist destination but also faces challenges such as underpaid teachers and overcrowded classrooms.
After the walk, participants gathered in front of the Hotel Mediterráneo for a "sit-in" where they discussed books and the strike, with minimal police presence. This action is part of a "calm mobilization" strategy to gain visibility without resorting to violence.
As part of this same tactic, another action took place on Monday morning: teachers slowly crossed a pedestrian crossing at one of the main city access points to slow down traffic, demonstrating that "not even pickets are needed" to make their voices heard, but rather "much composure and faith in public education."
