The Sea Museum of Santa Pola has inaugurated a new hall dedicated to the memory of the Honorary Life Warden of the Castle-Fortress, a figure closely linked to the recent history of the municipality.

This new space, inaugurated in an emotional ceremony with the presence of family, friends, and institutional representatives, begins with a symbolic circumstance: the first exhibition it hosts is the work of his niece, Sofía Cuervo-Arango.
The inauguration gathered a large group of close acquaintances, led by his wife, María del Carmen de Cachavera, on a day presided over by the Mayor of Santa Pola, Loreto Serrano, along with several members of the municipal corporation and the Provincial Deputy for Culture, Juan de Dios Navarro. During the event, speeches focused on the personal, cultural, and social legacy of the honored figure.
The City Council thus wished to pay tribute to someone who left a significant mark on local life through his professional career, cultural involvement, and connection to Santa Pola's heritage. The hall includes a commemorative plaque unveiled by the mayor and the widow.
The municipal plenary unanimously agreed on August 26, 2005, to name the honored figure Honorary Life Warden of the Castle-Fortress of Santa Pola, in recognition of his services to the town, his personal merits, and his humanist profile. His figure was associated with values such as understanding, collaboration, effort, friendship, and dialogue. In the business sector, he served as director of Salinas Braç del Port and stood out as a patron and collaborator in the restoration of historical heritage, with special mention of the Torre del Tamarit, in addition to his involvement in cultural activities linked to the Sea Museum.
His connection with Santa Pola also extended to the sports field. He was a great enthusiast of nautical sports, especially rowing and fishing, and held responsibilities as president of the Santa Pola Yacht Club between 1987 and 1991, president of the Association of Yacht Clubs of the Province of Alicante, and vice-president of the Rowing Federation of the Valencian Community. In 2005, he was also the town crier for the patron saint festivities.
The new exhibition hall will also serve as the venue for the public call for local plastic arts projects and exhibitions of historical and artistic interest named after the honored figure. This initiative will allow artists born in or linked to Santa Pola to display their works there.
In this first edition, the jury selected four individual projects and several collective proposals. Among them is Tejiendo su estela, by Sofía Cuervo-Arango, the honoree's niece, a coincidence that has marked the opening of this space. The exhibition transforms the Mediterranean landscape into a material and emotional memory, through tapestries made with used marine ropes, reeds, wood, and natural fibers, inspired by the sea, salt flats, and coastal architecture.
The artist explains that the inspiration for her works comes from places linked to her life journey: Mallorca, Almería, and Santa Pola, with the latter being especially significant in this exhibition. One of the pieces, which shares its title with the exhibition, is dedicated to her uncle and represents his love for the sea and the mark he has left. The exhibition can be visited free of charge at the Sea Museum until June 7, every day except Mondays.
