The municipal company Pimesa has filed a complaint with the National Police Station in Elche regarding new acts of vandalism against several bicycles belonging to the public BiciElx service. Intentional tampering with essential safety components for users has been detected. The latest incident affected five vehicles parked on Paseo de la Juventud, where the brake and gear cables were cut during the early hours of June 8th.
The seriousness of this attack, according to the municipal company, is not limited to material damage. The disabling of the brakes can pose a direct risk to users who take a vehicle without prior warning of the tampering and start riding. The incidents occurred at station number 96 of BiciElx, near the Santa Teresa bridge. The economic value of the damages is still pending quantification, but the primary concern is safety, as the cut brakes are not immediately apparent.
The five affected bicycles have had to be removed from service for inspection and repair. Pimesa insists on the need for thorough checks to ensure all components are functioning correctly before they are made available to the public again.
This incident is not an isolated event. From July 2025 to May 2026, a high and repeated number of sabotaged bicycles have been recorded, including cuts and damage to tires and inner tubes. The new complaint expands the scope of the vandalism by confirming that attacks have also targeted brakes and gears, key components for safe travel. The continuity and manner in which the damage occurs suggest deliberate actions against public service assets.
Each damaged bicycle must be removed, repaired, and immobilized, reducing the system's availability and inconveniencing daily users. The police investigation will need to determine if the attacks over recent months are the work of the same perpetrator. Intentional tampering harms the service both through repair costs and potential risks to user safety.
Pimesa calls for the attacks to be clarified and the responsible parties identified. The chain of damage has increased in severity, progressing from tire cuts to tampering with brakes and gears, posing a potentially greater risk. The complaint aims to put a stop to this ongoing sabotage affecting a service used daily by the community.
