The Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) in Elche has warned of a potential increase in evictions in the city, following the non-extension of the anti-eviction moratorium, which could affect hundreds of vulnerable families.

The PAH in Elche and Crevillent has expressed concern over the situation of 70,000 vulnerable people nationwide, after the Congress of Deputies failed to approve the continuation of the anti-eviction moratorium. In Elche, the platform estimates that hundreds of cases could be affected, with a growing number of new residential risk situations.

"Right now, the policy of both the Elche City Council and the Generalitat is to privatize public land to build a few homes, of which, in the Elche plan, only four will be social housing."

Gloria Marín · Spokesperson for PAH Elx-Crevillent
Gloria Marín, spokesperson for PAH Elx-Crevillent, has criticized the housing policy of the Elche City Council and the Valencian Generalitat, pointing out that the privatization of public land is being prioritized. According to Marín, out of the 300 homes planned in the Easy Home Plan, only four will be social housing in Elche, leaving many families without housing alternatives.
The platform emphasizes that the current problem is not limited to evictions, mostly due to rent non-payment, but also to the general difficulty of accessing housing. Many of those affected have jobs, pensions, or salaries, but face rental contracts that, upon expiration, can see their price doubled, forcing them to leave their homes.
The PAH continues to demand the declaration of Elche as a stressed area, a measure that the City Council has rejected for ideological reasons, according to the platform. This declaration would allow for the regulation of rental prices, benefiting many citizens without significantly harming landlords.
Currently, the PAH in Elche is managing about ten family cases, although Marín warns that this figure is just the tip of the iceberg, as many people do not approach the platform. Cases include rentals from banks, social leases from these entities, and private rentals.
The spokesperson also lamented the lack of municipal social housing, with only six available and all occupied, considering them "clearly insufficient". Furthermore, she contrasted the response of the Elche City Council with that of Crevillent, where an eviction was recently halted with a "much more favorable" municipal attitude.
Finally, the PAH denounces that Elche's Social Services only offer emergency overnight services through entities such as Cáritas and Conciénciate, without providing long-term housing solutions.
