The Elche City Council paid tribute this Saturday to Juan Carlos Cano Peñalver by officially naming the La Hoya sports pavilion after him, in recognition of his contribution to sports and neighborhood coexistence.

The event, held at the La Hoya sports facilities, was attended by the mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, family members, neighbors, and representatives of local entities. During the tribute, a replica of the commemorative plaque identifying the venue as “Polideportivo Juan Carlos Cano” was presented to the family.
Juan Carlos Cano Peñalver, born in 1962, was a person deeply connected to the social and sporting life of La Hoya. From the beginning, he supported the creation and consolidation of the football team of the La Hoya Cultural and Sports Association, and actively collaborated in numerous sporting and social initiatives developed in the district.
His death in a traffic accident in 1985 was a profound loss for his family, friends, and the entire La Hoya community. As a token of the affection and recognition his figure has always inspired, various initiatives have been promoted in his memory over the years, including the Juan Carlos Cano Memorial, a football tournament that keeps his memory alive among generations of residents and athletes.
With this renaming, the Elche City Council publicly acknowledges the impact Juan Carlos Cano left on La Hoya and highlights the principles of commitment, participation, and service to the community that marked his personal and sporting career.
