The Elche City Council will begin in August the dismantling of the Riegos El Progreso facade, an action that will allow the protected element to be preserved and integrated into a new municipal building.

This action, which will start after the patron saint festivities, aims to preserve the facade and integrate it into a new municipal building aligned with the street. The Local Government Board has already approved the manual demolition project for the facade, and this week the tender for the works will be greenlighted for an amount of 213,000 euros and an execution period of three months.
The main facade will be manually dismantled to ensure the recovery of the ashlar stones that form elements such as the pediment, cornice, window surrounds, and plinth. Each piece will be numbered to facilitate its subsequent repositioning in the new building. In addition, the party walls and the wall facing the interior patio will be preserved, where original openings will be manually reopened.
The future municipal property will have a basement, ground floor, and four upper floors, in addition to a built area of nearly 1,000 square meters. The project includes open-plan spaces of about 130 useful meters per floor, with the possibility of flexible compartmentalization using glass partitions to promote natural light entry. The building will also have an elevator, linear staircase, toilets on each floor, and a gabled roof with technical space for installations. The action will respect the original composition of the facade and incorporate a contemporary recessed glazed enclosure.

"This action will allow us to recover a building that had been shored up for almost a decade, in addition to reopening the two traffic lanes in the area and alleviating traffic."

In parallel to the dismantling, the City Council will tender the necessary surveys and geotechnical study for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the property. The estimated budget for the execution of the new building amounts to 1.9 million euros. The City Council plans to allocate the building to municipal offices, with the aim of reorganizing services and reducing rental expenses.
