The sports program, framed within Elche's designation as Mediterranean Sports Capital 2026, will coincide with promotion matches for senior teams to national categories in a dozen modalities. The City Council highlights that this concentration of events reinforces the city's projection as one of the sports hubs of the Mediterranean during these weeks.
“"Elche is experiencing a sporting moment like never before in its history, with numerous sports events in the coming days that demonstrate the importance of this city as the Mediterranean Sports Capital."
Among the planned competitions are the International Inclusive Rugby Championship, as well as the regional final phase of U11 and U13 volleyball, an event expected to attract nearly 1,500 athletes. Additionally, the Spanish Indoor Apnea Championship will take place, featuring a local athlete from Elche.
One of the aspects most emphasized by the council is the economic return these events will bring to the city. In this regard, the national indoor apnea championship will guarantee, according to the Sports Department, more than 4,500 overnight stays, a figure that points to a technical full occupancy in the hotel sector during those days.
The succession of trials and tournaments in just two weeks will also affect commercial and hospitality activity, by attracting athletes, technical teams, family members, and companions. The local government believes that this program consolidates the value of the sports strategy promoted around the capital status.
“"We are at a peak moment for Elche's sports as the Mediterranean Sports Capital, and all of this is thanks to a strategic alliance between the Elche City Council, Miguel Hernández University, and the Elche Sports Foundation, along with local clubs."
