According to the collective, this decision reinforces the healthcare imbalance in the area and fails to address the sustained population growth. Lack of investment and poor data transparency are key factors highlighting inequalities among the Valencian Community's departments.
A report from the Ministry of Health, corresponding to the second half of 2025, indicates that the Valencian Community has an average delay of 95 days for a first specialized care consultation. However, the Torrevieja platform points out that this global figure does not reflect the local reality, where waiting times are much longer.
Initial specialized consultations are crucial for diagnosis and treatment, and their saturation creates a bottleneck in the healthcare system, affecting the quality of care. The platform criticizes the lack of disaggregated information by department, a practice that prevents identifying territorial inequalities and hinders the adoption of specific measures.
While metropolitan areas like Valencia have more resources, peripheral zones such as Torrevieja face significant deficiencies, exacerbated by their recent reversion to the public system after years of outsourced management. Torrevieja's population growth has not been matched by a proportional reinforcement of public health services, leading to structural waiting lists and a decline in quality.
Furthermore, the paralysis or delay of key infrastructures, including the second hospital projected for the department, worsens the situation. Torrevieja's exclusion from the bed expansion plan is particularly concerning, as the department has fewer beds per inhabitant than the regional average.
The platform demands a firm commitment to the public system, with the publication of disaggregated data, greater investment in infrastructure and human resources, and the implementation of a guarantee framework establishing maximum access times for healthcare services. In other autonomous communities, such as Castilla-La Mancha or the Region of Murcia, models with established deadlines for diagnostic tests, consultations, and surgeries already exist.
