This recognition comes thanks to the notable involvement of comparsas, festive entities, and citizens in the selective collection of glass during the festive days. Specifically in Orihuela, a total of 6,200 kilograms of glass were recycled during the celebrations and subsequent days, demonstrating a strong environmental commitment.
The campaign's closing event was held at the María Moliner Library in the city and was attended by various authorities. Among those present were the mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara; the regional secretary for Environment, Sabina Goretti Galindo; and the general director of Quality and Environmental Education, Jorge Blanco. Representatives from Ecovidrio, as well as members of the municipal corporation and the festive sector, also participated.
“"This recognition belongs to the entire municipality. Festivities are a time when citizens feel particularly identified with the collective life of the municipality, which facilitates the transmission of environmental awareness messages."
Vegara emphasized the importance of collective involvement in achieving these results, arguing that tradition and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. He highlighted that celebrations generate activity and waste, requiring a joint response from administrations and citizens to keep the city clean and move towards a more sustainable model.
For her part, the regional secretary for Environment highlighted the value of an initiative that combines festivity, tradition, and sustainability. She stressed the fundamental role of environmental education and social participation in the campaign's success. As she explained, in the last edition, more than 263,000 kilograms of glass were recycled in the participating municipalities, representing a 5% increase compared to the previous year.
The 'La Reconquista del Vidrio' campaign, promoted by Ecovidrio in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana and participating city councils, aims to encourage the selective collection of glass during the Moors and Christians festivities. This is achieved through awareness actions, themed containers, and teams of environmental educators who visit festive areas to inform about proper waste separation.
In this edition, 38 municipalities in the Valencian Community participated, with Orihuela, l'Olleria, and Aspe being the winning localities in their respective categories. Ecovidrio has already announced a new edition of the campaign for 2026, with the goal of continuing to improve recycling results.
