Municipal representatives and the Water Court met today with CHS technicians to address the worrying accumulation of trash in the riverbed as it passes through the town. They stated that the lack of floating nets in upstream municipalities causes a large amount of waste to end up in the Orihuela municipal area.
This situation not only creates a negative environmental impact but also saturates the barriers installed in the municipality and severely damages the operation of the irrigation ditches and the traditional irrigation system of the Orihuela orchard. Officials warned that the problem worsens especially during rain episodes or when the river flow increases.
“"Orihuela cannot assume alone a problem generated by the lack of floating nets in other municipalities. It is essential that there are effective containment measures in all sections of the river to prevent waste from reaching our riverbed."
For its part, the Private Water Court emphasized that the accumulation of waste hinders the service of water intakes and historical hydraulic infrastructure. For this reason, they have demanded a permanent solution that guarantees the protection of the river and the agricultural heritage of the Vega Baja.
