The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on a road near the La Pedrera reservoir, where a car hit four cyclists. According to Irish press reports, friends of the former military man have launched a fundraising campaign to facilitate his family's travel to Spain so they can be with him during his hospitalization.
Of the four cyclists involved, three sustained serious injuries, although the condition of two of them is not life-threatening. A fourth cyclist suffered minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle involved was operating an adapted vehicle that was not approved for use.
“"Near where the last cyclists were hit, there have been several accidents, especially on the reservoir road. In fact, a motorcyclist died further along recently, and 300 meters further, two more died."
Given the frequency of such incidents, residents of the Orihuela hamlet of Torremendo have raised their voices to demand measures that improve safety on local roads. Paco García, another resident, highlighted the danger of these roads, especially for motorcycles and during weekends.
“"They should put something in place to reduce car speeds, because of the narrowness of the road and for everyone's safety."
Cyclists, one of the most affected groups, have also joined the call, requesting enhanced road safety to allow them to ride safely on the roads of the Vega Baja. Alfonso García, another cycling enthusiast, mentioned the example of Altea, where traffic signs have been installed to warn drivers of the presence of cyclists.
