The Civil Guard has arrested a 32-year-old man in Dolores, accused of three 'smishing' scams, which involve sending fake SMS messages impersonating banking entities.

The arrested individual allegedly defrauded at least three citizens from Murcia, Badajoz, and the Canary Islands. Investigators documented that once victims clicked on the fraudulent message link, the man managed to steal their personal and banking credentials using malicious software. In this manner, he managed to steal over 2,000 euros in cash.
The operation, named 'Nodo_26', began in September following a complaint. The victim, a resident of Oliva de la Frontera (Badajoz), had provided their data after receiving a fraudulent message impersonating a well-known bank. With the obtained information, the perpetrator created a virtual bank card, which he used to withdraw 1,200 euros from an ATM in Guardamar del Segura.
The investigation included the analysis of electronic traces and the study of security camera footage. On March 23, the alleged perpetrator was located and arrested in a neighborhood of Dolores. After giving a statement at the Court of First Instance of Orihuela, the man has been released with charges.

The Civil Guard reminds the public of the importance of not providing personal or banking details through unverified messages and recommends extreme caution against possible digital fraud attempts.

Agents continue with the ongoing investigation and do not rule out the possibility of new victims related to these events.
