The Consell has announced an investment exceeding 57 million euros for Vega Baja, aimed at strengthening territorial protection against floods and modernizing water infrastructure and irrigation systems.

The Consell's overall investment in Vega Baja surpasses 57 million euros, with the objective of improving territorial protection against potential floods and advancing the modernization of water infrastructure and irrigation systems. The Minister of Agriculture, Water, Livestock, and Fisheries, Miguel Barrachina, has emphasized that these actions aim to “reinforce both flood safety and the efficiency of irrigation”.
Barrachina made these statements during his visit to the flood safety improvement works on the left bank of the Segura River, within the municipality of Guardamar del Segura. These works, with a budget exceeding 16 million euros, are part of the main planned actions to reduce risk in the region.
The minister recalled that in 2026 alone, the Generalitat is allocating 35.6 million euros to water-related actions in the province of Alicante. He stressed that water infrastructure “continues to be a strategic priority for the Consell, as reflected in the budgetary increase for this fiscal year”.
The regional budget includes 90.8 million euros for water investments, compared to 68 million in the previous fiscal year, representing a 33% increase. “We are committed to modernizing irrigation, the Júcar-Vinalopó post-transfer, and investments in Vega Baja,” stated Barrachina.
The visited project is structured around two complementary initiatives within the flood safety improvement strategy for Vega Baja del Segura. The first is the restoration of the riverbed's slope at the mouth of the Segura River, which has been fully completed. The second involves enhancing hydraulic capacity through the Azarbe del Señor Green Corridor, in its first phase.
Both interventions aim to channel and evacuate water accumulated after intense rainfall episodes, thereby reducing the risk of flooding in the region's population centers. They also facilitate better utilization of water resources generated during these events.
The works are part of the most significant actions under the Vega Baja Flood Prevention Plan. To date, over 80,000 cubic meters of dredging have been completed, with an advancement rate of 96.21%. Barrachina highlighted that this figure reflects “a very advanced stage of the works”.
The Green Corridor involves the construction of a reinforced concrete channel running parallel and adjacent to the Azarbe de la Reina, incorporating the Azarbe del Señor, which is currently piped. The projected channel has a total length of 620 meters, a width of 9 meters, and variable depths ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 meters, distributed across three sections.
According to the work progress forecast for June, dredging is at 96.21% completion, while the Green Corridor has reached 64.39%. These percentages confirm the progress of a project considered strategic for improving flood prevention in Vega Baja.
